The Thing that Grows

There exists this thing. This object. It started small, and started to grow. It has income and it has expenses. They both grew, the income always outdistancing the expenses. The little thing that could just ballooned. Everyone was happy, and more expenses were added, because hey, we can handle that.

And everything was good. And through time, most people that interacted with the thing came away happy.

Turmoil strikes. The income, in it's natural flux hit a slow spot, and the expenses just kept increasing. Things looked bad. The thing started limping. Another big thing looked at it and said yum. The big thing wasn't as cool as the thing. It was built with more of a machine like quality to carefully control the income and the expenses.

So, what does the thing need to do?

Cut expenses naturally. Something has to give. There are tons of expenses the thing endures that could be dropped. And really, the thing would work fine if it stepped back a little. It needed to go back to its roots.

"What made me great?" asked the thing. The thing had people as well. These people were skilled, and through the years had grown more skilled at making the thing run. They might not have been skilled at making the thing grow larger, but they were certainly good at making people happy. And the more happy people were, the more guarantee there was that the thing was going to maintain or grow income.

The thing could go bare bones with basically only its people. It could cut a ton of expenses in the process. Those things that started to weigh the thing down.

I love the thing. It's been my life. I think working harder at making the thing stay alive is better than working harder elsewhere.
